I Knew

Lyrics and Music ©2022 by Bill Roper

I finally managed to start writing songs again on a more regular basis post-pandemic. This song is at least semi-autobiographical.

I leave it to the interested observer to figure out which parts are which.

(Chorus)
C Em F G C C Em F G
I knew, but I didn’t know why.
C Em F D G
I knew, but I couldn’t see it, standing under a clear, blue sky.
F G C F
I knew that I just needed to spread my wings and fly.
C Em F G C
I knew, but I didn’t know why.

C Em F G
I just needed something new,
F Dm F G
Nothing borrowed, nothing blue.
C Em F G
Someone who was just like you
   F G
To help me get away.
Am D G
Someone to be there and to make me smile for a little while.
Am D G
Someone to spend a day, let me know she cared when I didn’t dare.

I’m not the brightest guy,
Unobservant, passing shy.
Someone would sure have to try
To knock some sense in me.
Someone to make me see, open up my eyes, be a little wise.
Someone so close to me, whispers in my ear that she’s waiting here.

I got a big surprise.
Found out just what that implies.
Talked until the next sunrise
Sent the night away.
Now there is someone who I see with pride, standing by my side.
Someone who’s always there, just to share a smile for a little while.

(Chorus twice)
C Em F G C
I knew, but I didn’t know why.
C Em F G C
I knew, but I didn’t know why.
