Falling Toward Orion

Lyrics and Music ©2003 by Bill Roper

I came up with the idea for this song when I looked out the window as Gretchen and I were driving down to OVFF and saw Orion high in the southern sky. I had the chorus quickly enough to use it in a writer's workshop at OVFF; the rest of the song followed not long after.

Cmaj7 Fmaj7 Cmaj7 Fmaj7
High upon a hill, closer to the sky,
Cmaj7 Fmaj7 Cmaj7 Fmaj7
Gazing through a cloudless night
Cmaj7 Fmaj7 Cmaj7 Fmaj7
When the moon is new and Orion's high
Cmaj7 Fmaj7 A
And lost souls are taking flight.
Em G A Em G A
Far above the horizon, hear the galaxy call.
F G A F G A
And although I am rising, it's a long way to fall.

	(Chorus)
	A5 G6 Fmaj7 A5 G6 Fmaj7
And I'm falling toward Orion from a terrible height.
	A5 G6 Fmaj7 A5 G6 Fmaj7
And I'm falling toward Orion and I'm lost in the night
	      A
	With Orion.

Past the atmosphere, nothing left to hear
Except the calling of the stars
Shining brighter now and I wonder how
Things could ever get this far.
Leaping up, soaring higher, reaching into the void
As I'm fleeing the fire that I still can't avoid.

Far away from home, from where the planets roam,
Distant stars are drawing near.
Constellations change, patterns rearrange,
And there's nothing left to fear.
I remember the pain now, but the memory's worn.
And I'm half past insane now, watching new stars be born.

It's so lonely now and I don't know how
I ever came to be this way.
And I miss you all, and it's so far to fall,
But I was never meant to stay.
And I wish I were stronger than the man that you knew,
But I couldn't stay longer in the absence of you.
